De Poort is purpose-built to showcase traditional crafts associated with the era of horse and cart. This was a time when our valley was known as "Wamakersvallei" or Wagon-makers Valley, the centre of the early transport industry. Here there were hundreds of craft workshops, even factories producing all kinds of ox, mule and horse-drawn vehicles. Interactive workshops will demonstrate the skills of the blacksmith, farrier, wheelwright, leather worker, upholsterer. We are also interested in traditional toys and period handicrafts such as lacemaking and basket-weaving. Artisan crafters will be able to use the workshops in Phase 1 and 2 to produce and demonstrate their handiwork. Crafters can demonstrate their skills using the interactive workshop and sell their handiwork to visitors year-round. You will also be able to learn new skills on-site; supply our craft and farmers' markets or run your own stall. Home-workers and people with disabilities will also be able to earn money from selling goods and services at De Poort village. Crafters, young people, homeworkers and volunteers come for hands-on training in artesan and heritage crafts: restoration; forge; farrier; carpentry; painting; upholstery; catering; gift-making; leatherwork; harnessmaking; basket weaving; traditional music; cart driving; grooming; stall management; event organisation; setting up a craft business and more.
